Bachelor of Business Administration (Insurance) - B.B.A.

Objectives
The Bachelor of Business Administration Program (Insurance) is designed to meet the needs of the business community along with the economic and social development of the nation.

Specifically, it aims at:

  • providing qualified professional education in all branches of insurance
  • enhancing professional knowledge in insurance by offering opportunities in research, continued education and the exchange of ideas.
  • nurturing the international character of insurance by offering instruction in English.
  • providing the foundation for graduate degrees such as:
    • Masters of Insurance
    • M.B.A. (Insurance)
    • M.S. (Actuarial Science)
    • M.B.A.
    • M.Comm.
  • providing the groundwork for:
    1. The British ACII and FCII exams;
    2. The New Zealand AIINZ and FIINZ exams; (see Special Note);
    3. The American CPCU, CLU, ChFC, FLMI, SM, INS, AIC, AIM, ARM, AU, ALCM, AAI, APA, ARP, AIAM, AMIM, AAM and ARC exams;
    4. The Society of Actuaries (http://www.soa.org) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (http://www.casact.org) exams.
  • offering practical training in insurance through internship programs.
  • providing an opportunity to obtain a degree in insurance for those employed in the insurance field but holding degrees in other fields.
  • providing an opportunity for employees of insurance companies lacking other professional qualifications to enhance their careers through education and training in insurance.

Special Note
ABAC's BBA (Insurance) graduates are exempted from examination in the following subjects of The Insurance Institute of New Zealand's Associateship Courses:

  • Introduction to Insurance
  • Types of Insurance Contracts
  • Business Communication
  • Business and Commercial Practice

Additional exemptions may be granted in the Intermediate and Associate Part subjects provided that the applicants can show that they have substantially covered the prescribed Institute syllabus through other studies.

Students should send individual applications for exemptions in writing to the Insurance Institute of New Zealand. They should enclose a certified photocopy of their academic transcripts and details of their academic courses of study. If necessary, they may also include information about future academic plans and the details of that program.

The Program
This is a four-year program leading toward the degree of BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (INSURANCE) or BBA (INSURANCE). Under this program seven major fields of study in insurance are offered, viz:

Property and Casualty Insurance
General Insurance
Life Assurance
Marine and Aviation Insurance
Industrial Management
Real Estate
Actuarial Science

The student must also select a minor field of study from any one of the following fields of the Business Administration program:

Marketing
General Management
Finance and Banking
Accounting
Business Computer
Hotel Management
Advertising Management
International Business Management
Real Estate

Requirements for Graduation
Assumption University confers the degree of Bachelor in Business Administration (Insurance) upon students who meet all the general requirements and the specific requirements listed below:

General Requirements
Complete a minimum of 144 credits from any of the major and minor Fields offered in the specified curriculum as follows:

  2. Have participated in 16 sessions of the seminar in Ethics for Businessmen.
  3. Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 ("C" average).
  4. Have library and financial clearance with the University.
  5. Have good behavior and discipline.
  6. Make a formal application for graduation.

Specific Requirements
The following indicates the minimum number of credits which must be earned in each of the designated categories: students must have at least "C" grade in all major required courses.
